I vaguely recall taking some pleasure when the new construction trades building was proposed for Algonquin College, as it has large green (planted) roof areas and a colourful exterior.
Each visit to the College Station at Baseline and Woodroffe proved disappointing, as the building seemed to grow uglier each month. I know, I know, it’s reckless to knock it before it is finished. But where were the coloured windows?
I checked out the building rendering on display in the front window of the architect’s offices on Slater Street, and the windows were not colourful, just bland ole’ gray. Chalk up another victory for dullsville, I thought.
Then this week…
colourful window frames appear, transforming bland to eye-catching. Hopefully, we’ll see some red trim soon. Ottawa is a winter city, and buildings need to be attractive and cheery in those SAD months.
Yay,
Another Tupper building!

Wow…Mattiavelli, that is the longest link in the history of links. I have a fondness for the old Tupper building (my dad worked there for years and I often visited) though I do think the coloured panels could use a fresh paint job. The walkway over Woodroffe will at least make the new trades building unique. As for this “Ottawa is a winter city, and buildings need to be attractive and cheery in those SAD months.” I couldn’t agree more. Colour helps… http://ottawabikeguy.blogspot.com/
Wow…Mattiavelli! That is the longest link I have ever seen! I actually don’t mind the old Tupper building. It does need a fresh coat of paint on the colour panels though. “Ottawa is a winter city, and buildings need to be attractive and cheery in those SAD months.” I couldn’t agree more. Sadly they seem to have toned down the colour accents on this building and it looks like it will now just have green and yellow accents: http://www.algonquincollege.com/acce/
It’s too bad; I quite liked the earlier version with red, blue and yellow accents (which can still be seen as a small image here: http://www.algonquincollege.com/expansion
