Madame Chairman sent crews of workers down to LeBreton Flats and the Preston “extension” on Friday morning. Crews were busy adjusting the tension on the chain link fence, lopping off a few weeds, removing a superannuated “stop” sign, etc.
They even cut off the protruding rebar and its chip-bag safety cone top:
While I was watching the crews, there were a steady stream of walkers and cyclists going through the gate. And a trickle of media-types to check up on the path.
That the path is reopened is an example of people-power over the bureaucracy. Together, by complaining to Madame Chairman, our MP, and our councillors, we got a much-used path restored to public use. Thanks are due to all the people who complained, and our government bodies that listened.
Go safely and prosper.
WoW! The NCC actually listened to the people. Good on those who took the time to speak out. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a new era for the NCC and local governments…
EXcellent news!
Excellent news indeed. Now all we have to do is get something attractive put in to all of Lebreton Flats, and maybe the NCC won’t be so bad…
And thanks to you too, sir. Keep it up (and we’re happy to help however we can!).
Jim
Dear WestSideAction and all the people who took the time to contact people about this issue … you are my heroes. After all, it is our city.
We were at the gate today and the main part is still locked, but now there is a small opening – big enough for a person and bike to go through, on the side.
Nice work Eric! I know you didn’t do it all yourself but writing about it certainly helped.
Now all we need is for someone to put in an ATIP request against Madame Chairman’s GoC NCC email account so that we can get the true story on why the gate was locked to start with….and not the NCC’s cock and bull story about pedestrians illegally crossing the Transitway….or cars driving/parking on that closed street. I wonder if the conversations goes back as far as Bluesfest or not…
That might be an entertaining read-through. Someday.
Dang. I had visions in my head of our esteemed host-blogger delivering his impassioned speech. “Madam Chairman: Tear. Down. This. Gate.”
