Mr Potato Head as Art

You’ve read posts here before about this house on Lisgar. A very nice garden was installed here during the summer.http://westsideaction.wordpress.com/2010/06/29/gardening-in-centretown/  It emphasizes shapes and form using plants, and there was the corrugated artwork on the right side. An architect lives here (how could we guess?) and at night large paintings similar to the exterior corrugated one can be seen inside. This week, I noticed the new sculpture in the centre of the garden. Maybe I watched Toy Story  once too often, but I found myself saying hello to Mr Potato Head as I walked by. I hope that tree wasn’t harmed … Continue reading Mr Potato Head as Art

Mispriced parking

The City continues to devote enormous sums of money every year to providing free parking spaces for motorists to store their cars. Public rights of way are a limited commodity, yet the City insists that the highest and best use for these rights of way is not for street trees, wide sidewalks, or other “people” and environment benefits. A little bit further along the street, is this new front yard landscaping: The brick pavers are more formal. The new fence is attractive, but also quite high. The situation is different from the first condo, as there is a thriving row of foundation shrubs … Continue reading Fence me in…

Historical signage

Just a few blocks east of the unveiled Cambridge corner store signs, is a house that always gives me pleasure to walk past. It is at the corner of Lisgar and Bay. Note the bricked up store windows, the too-small replacement window, the missing corner door, the old painted signage on the brickwork. – Someday I am sure someone will “improve” this house with a coat of paint or (shudder) aluminum siding. And then the story it tells will be lost. This house is like a friend on the street, a very old friend, showing what life used to be … Continue reading Historical signage
